KISS #1 – Comic Book Review

The rock band KISS have had a long history with comic books. Starring in them, they’ve hung out with Howard the Duck, the X-Men, Archie Andrews and more. Outside of them they made a film in which they were superheroes, and had their own blood mixed in with the ink at the Marvel printers… however, apparently it’s really only Gene Simmons in the band who’s a huge comic book fan. But what kind of comic book should fans expect from the rockers now?

Based on this first issue, a damn good one.

KISS to ‘Rock and Roll All Nite’ in Tijuana

By  / DiscoverSD

In November, legendary rock band KISS will play Tijuana, Mexico, for the first time, to the delight of both the band and the country. The Nov. 19 show will be held at the Estadio Gasmart, the stadium of the Toros de Tijuana baseball team that has a seating capacity of nearly 17,000 people.

Gene Simmons, bassist and KISS co-founder, said he is looking forward to playing Tijuana.

“We’ve been coming to Mexico for 30 or 40 years,” Simmons said. “We’ve hit most of the large cities, played the stadiums there and it’s always been a lot of fun. At the stadium it’s been mania — people were doing all kinds of things. Publicly, well, I would say going to a KISS concert is as much fun as you can have with your pants on.”

Simmons has fond memories of performing in Mexico during KISS’ decades of touring worldwide and selling millions of records. One concert in Mexico City years ago stands out to him: It all started when, to the dismay of security, an audience member tossed a monstrous sombrero onstage.

“I stopped the security and said, ‘No, no it’s OK, it’s OK!’ ” Simmons said. “They didn't understand what I was doing so I took the sombrero off the floor … And then I put it on and the place went nuts and everyone started singing the Mexican national anthem right in the middle of the show. So we stopped and we let them sing it.

Reading Royals to wear KISS themed jerseys for charity

By  Josh Cooper / Yahoo Sports

The Reading Royals of the ECHL want to show their love of the band KISS and tie this appreciation into charity.

So on Nov. 12 they’re going to sell KISS themed jerseys during their game that night against the Manchester Monarchs. Then on Nov. 26, fans will be able to watch the Royals wearing the same KISS jerseys when they host the Cincinnati Cyclones.

The Nov. 26 game is the Royals’ “Night of Hope” which will raise funds for Hope Rescue Mission in Reading. This charity, “has been a place of refuge for the homeless men of Berks County, PA” since 1894.

After the game, some the game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off for charity, while others will be sold on the weekly online auction for the team.

The Royals, an affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, have said if fans bring real band members to the game, both the fan and the band member will get a free jersey. The team noted in an email that “the Reading Royals and our fans are some of the biggest KISS fans in the world.”

They also said many went to a recent KISS concert in Allentown.

KISS has a strong recent hockey legacy. The band was in a photo hugging NHL commissioner Gary Bettman at the 2014 Stadium Series game at Dodger Stadium, an event where they provided the musical entertainment.
