KISS & Momoiro Clover Z at Anime Expo 2015

KISS, one of the most visually recognizable bands in the history of music, could easily be thought of as rock's most popular band of cosplayers, which would make its relationship with the Anime Expo and Japanese pop band Momoiro Clover Z not a surprising thing at all.

The all-girl, anime-inspired teen group best known in the U.S. for singing the theme songs to anime programs such as "Dragon Ball," "Sailor Moon" and "Pokemon" and the hard rockers who "want to party every day" are seemingly at opposite ends of the musical spectrum.

KISS, formed in 1973 by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons, brings to mind black-and-white makeup, fire onstage, and tongue-wagging guitar riffs. MCZ — comprised of Reni Takagi, Kanako Momota, Akari Hayami, Shiori Tamai and Ayaka Sasaki — formed in 2008 and fills arenas in Japan with screaming tweens, there to watch the colorfully costumed singers and their intricate choreography.

Between Feb. 23 and March 3, KISS performed to over 1.3 million fans during the band's tour of Japan (in Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima and Sendai), including performing a duet with MCZ at the Tokyo Dome to over 30,000 fans.

Yet, despite the differences, there is a connection.

"We liked MCZ's music — great pop hooks, great song structures. When the groups perform live onstage, the fans in the audience do the same movements as the girls do. We love that. That's what KISS is all about. Connection," Simmons said.

Simmons and Stanley of KISS will be introducing Momoiro Clover Z at a special concert in association with the Anime Expo on Thursday. AX, as the convention is also called, is in its 24th year and is presented by The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation. This year, the show will play host to over 100,000 lovers of manga, anime and Japanese pop culture July 2-5 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

Eric Singer named to the jury of Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genčve!

By Stephen Pulvirent / Bloomberg Business

Eric Singer, drummer for the rock band Kiss, has been named to the jury of watchmaking's highest awards, the Grand Prix d'Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). He is a well-known collector of eclectic timepieces and will join the rotating group of 26 jurors in Geneva this November as they select the best watches of 2015.

The GPHG is now entering its fourth year and has quickly become the most prestigious award ceremony in watchmaking, covering categories from grande complications to high jewelry on down to watches for less than $5,000. Brands must opt in to participate, and few well-known brands abstain (Rolex being the notable exception). Smaller brands, such as Ressence, use the GPHG as a way to earn some name recognition.

While Singer is a new addition, this year's jury is composed of many returning members, including jury president Aurel Bacs, of the newPhillips watch department. They're joined by such industry notables as René Beyer of Zurich's Beyer watch shop, Lebanese jeweler Claude Sfeir (who was the underbidder on the $24 million saleof the Patek Philippe Supercomplication), super collectors such as John Goldberger, as well as such journalists and writers as Elizabeth Doerr and Nick Foulkes. Singer's spot has previously been occupied by musician John Mayer and designer Philippe Starck, other famous watch lovers.

Breguet took last year's top prize, so per tradition, Breguet Vice President Jean-Charles Zufferey will also be joining the jury and Breguet will be ineligible for the Aiguille d'Or, or Golden Hand, award. This year's shortlist of competing watches will be announced July 15. Check this space for details then.

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band KISS is set to return to the San Manuel Casino for another acoustic concert set for July.

The band’s last gig at the casino was in April last year, billed as a no makeup, stripped down kind of show to feature “stories and songs.” This year’s show is simply being touted as a makeup-free “acoustic evening with KISS.”

Showtime is 7:30 p.m. July 23 at the Highland casino. Attendees must be 21 or older.

Tickets are available for purchase via Ticketmaster.

The current lineup features original members Paul Stanley (guitarist, singer) and Gene Simmons (bassist, vocalist) as well as drummer Eric Singer and guitarist Tommy Thayer.

Last year, attendees were given free hats of the Arena Football League team L.A. Kiss, which is sponsored by the casino. The team is co-owned by Stanley and Simmons and the show was used to publicize the team’s inaugural season.

Kiss is known for songs like “Rock and Roll All Nite” and “I Was Made for Lovin’ You.”
