News - 2014 : July

If it’s at all possible to perform an intimate set for 20,000 fans, KISS did it on July 13, 2014 at the Gexa Energy Pavilion in Dallas, Texas. As a longtime fan of the “Hottest Band in the World,” there was something unique about their set that night. Not that the band has ever shown anything different to their legion of fans, but there was an even higher level of sincerity in the voice of Paul Stanley as he addressed the audience.

The band kicked off the night with an energetic performance of the title track off of their reunion album “Psycho Circus.” The opening riffs of the song rang out as the band was lowered to the stage. They stood on a platform in the center of the now-famous metal-framed spider they’ve used on the past couple of tours. To say KISS was amped up and ready to fulfill the dreams of fans looking for a high-octane concert would be an understatement.

As a lone gun reporter, I had the wonderful opportunity of reviewing and taking photos of KISS for my article as well. Being the professional showmen they’re known to be, the guys immediately made their way to the front of the stage and put on a spectacle that would make any other rock act on tour right now embarrassed of themselves.

Break out the Aqua Net, dig out a real lighter and prepare to get rocked.

Kiss and Def Leppard will blow the (partial) roof off Aaron’s Amphitheatre at Lakewood on Friday with a night of fist pumpers, chest hair (well, on Paul Stanley, at least) and an arsenal of pyro.

At recent shows, Kiss has sandwiched beloved singalongs such as “Shout It Out Loud” and “Rock and Roll All Nite” with fan favorites “Christine Sixteen” and “War Machine.”

Def Leppard takes the stage before the costumed gods of thunder with a 75-minute set (keep an ear out for The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and you’ll know when the curtain is about to drop) that packs in 14 of its high-gloss anthems.

In a recent conference call with reporters, Kiss frontman Stanley noted that, “It’s a source of pride for us that we can have a 6-year-old, a 16-year-old and a 60-year-old” at the same concert.

Stanley also chatted about Kiss’ recent induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, his new memoir and why he thinks this is Kiss’ best tour ever.

Paul Stanley can fly. He soared over the audience, a star shooting across a starlit sky Sunday night at the Gexas Energy Pavilion. He landed on a spinning platform, while a demon, a cat and his Space Ace protector waited in the shadows. Standing above the crowd, Stanley played his guitar and worked the crowd like the superstar he is.

It's been 40 years. I've waited nearly half of my life to see the "greatest show on earth." Thousands of people were in attendance and one dollar of every ticket was donated to the Wounded Warrior Project. I'd never seen this many people at the pavilion in the two years I've been reporting for the Dallas Observer. KISS and Def Leppard didn't disappoint.

KISS took the heat to the next level. Riding atop a giant mechanical spider, Starchild (Paul Stanely), the Demon (Gene Simmons) and Space Ace (Tommy Thayer) descended toward the stage while Catman (Eric Singer) beat away on his drums. Bombs exploded, flames flashed and sparks shot from guitars, with the remnants of the supermoon lingering above. It was the perfect way to celebrate 40 years of a band that finally earned their rightful place in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame.

Las Vegas wanted the best, it's getting the best.

Kiss, which has used a variant of that line in its introductions for more than 35 years, will play a nine-show Sin City residency this fall. Kiss Rocks Vegas brings the self-proclaimed "hottest band in the land" to The Joint at Hard Rock Hotel & Casino beginning Nov. 5.

"Whatever you're used to with Kiss, this will pump it up that much more," says guitarist Paul Stanley. "If Kiss is on steroids, this is a double dose."

Tickets for Kiss Rocks Vegas will start at $49.50 and go on sale Friday at AXS.com.

Vegas Hard Rock spent more than a year trying to book a Kiss residency, says Chas Smith, vice president of entertainment. The Joint previously has hosted extended stays by Santana, Motley Crue, Guns N' Roses, Def Leppard and Tiësto.

He's preparing the Hard Rock for a full-scale Kiss Army invasion. "The activation will encompass the entire property for the month they're out here — from the performances onstage to wrapping the hotel with Kiss stuff to having team members wearing Kiss shirts," Smith says.

Under the Kiss Rocks Vegas configuration, The Joint will seat about 3,200.
