Brands come and brands go. We’ve seen the business cycle get shorter and shorter in past decades (Facebook’s 10-year reign seems like a lifetime) and it makes it harder and harder to carve out a lasting niche for yourself. What’s the use, entrepreneurs wonder, if their brand will be yesterday’s news almost as soon as they’ve started building it?

It’s rare to see anyone break the endless cycle of launches that end in immediate obscurity. That’s why the hard rock band Kiss’ 40th anniversary is so impressive.

Yes, there are important business lessons to be learned everywhere, even when they involve levitating drum sets and strapped leather outfits. Kiss . . . has something special.

Their success defies logic. Most rock bands from the 70s are long gone, but Kiss just keeps getting stronger. They’ve sold more than 100 million records and have the most gold albums of any American rock band—ever.

MY MOM ROCKED!
On what would have been my parents 58th Wedding Anniversary, June 9th, my Mom passed away. She was the BEST Mom in the world. She raised 2 generations of KISS fans. She saw KISS in concert with us 10 times and even once on her own. She always allowed us to listen to our music as loud as we wanted. And most of what we played was KISS.

Over the course of the 1970's and '80's, it grew on her to the point that, when the Hot In The Shade Tour came, she wanted to go. It was an outdoor concert on a full moon night. With the Sphinx and the lasers shooting out into infinity, she was blown away. She went to 10 more shows over the years, concluding with 2 shows on the Farewell tour and one of them on her own. At that show, while she was down front, Ace had a guitar pick brought out to her.

As the years went by, and her health declined, she couldn't go to the shows. When I saw KISS on the Monster Tour last summer, I didn't want to tell her I was going. But, somehow she knew. Just before I left she said to me, "Tell them to play Rock and Roll All Nite and Beth". I just smiled and asked her how she knew. She just said "oh I have my ways."

Near the end, she had exercises she had to do to help her throat muscles. One involved sticking out her tongue. She called them her Gene Simmons exercises. The picture is of us getting ready for the Farewell concert in Portland, Maine. That's her with 3 of her sons and her grandchildren. Thank you KISS for giving my Mom a lot of fun and joy. She and my father are together again. But I will always miss her. She always said,"I want you to throw a KISS party for me when I go". We will.

Best,
Lloyd Mudie

KISS frontman Paul Stanley exposes all sides of himself in frank, comprehensive autobiography

By Keith Spera, NOLA.com | The Times-Picayune

On paper at least, Stanley Bert Eisen, a working class Jewish kid from Queens, was an unlikely candidate for rock 'n' roll stardom -- and not just because of his aggressively un-rock 'n' roll name. He also was born with a stump for a right ear. Beyond rendering him deaf on that side, the deformity caused enormous psychological damage. Coupled with a dysfunctional family, it made for a difficult childhood.

A quest to compensate for the resultant emotional void largely explains Eisen's relentless drive to reinvent himself. With his face covered in makeup and his deformed ear hidden by a mass of curls, he morphed into Paul Stanley, the strutting, supremely confident Starchild of Kiss.

Stanley's lifelong struggle to reconcile his two selves -- the wounded, insecure, lonely man-child and the larger-than-life rock star -- is the underlying theme of "Face the Music: A Life Exposed" (HarperCollins), his recent autobiography. Much more than a collection of tawdry anecdotes, "Face the Music" is an up-by-the-bootstraps narrative and a search for identity, set in the anything-goes world of 1970s and '80s arena rock.

Stanley methodically peels away the Kiss mystique to matter-of-factly reveal the forces at work behind the music. He is the last of the original four members of Kiss to pen an autobiography. His may well be the authoritative account.
