THIS DAY IN TORY 1973

On this day in KISStory - January 30, 1973, KISS performed their very first concert at Popcorn (The Coventry) in Queens, NY. The band performed 2 sets at the club that night for a crowd of under 10 people.

Gene recalls how that show came about:

1973 was the beginning.

Wicked Lester had just finished its album for EPIC RECORDS. There were five members in the band, including Paul and myself. Though we had a real recording contract with a major label, and though we had finished an entire album, we were depressed. It just wasn't what we had envisioned.

So, we started again. We tried firing the other three guys in Wicked Lester, but some wouldn't leave. So, we quit.

We started again with a vision. 'Let's put together the band we never saw on stage.'

We got a manager named LOU LINET, who managed JF MURPHY AND FREE FLOWING SALT and DIANA MARCOVITZ (or something like that)...and when he heard the newborn baby -- KISS. He thought it was the worst crap he had ever heard. Needless to say, he was gone immediately. So, we were managerless.

I put together a bio kit, while I worked at the Puerto Rican Interagency Council, as assistant to the Director. Peter's friend owned a printing press and printed up our invites.

But, where to play? We didn't have a manager. We didn't have an agent. We never had.

I made a phone call cold to a place called Popcorn in Queens, NY and on the phone convinced the guy to hire a band, who would soon be changing their name from WICKED LESTER to KISS.

We got the gig -- three nights -- Wed, Thurs and Fri for the sum total of $150.

That was the beginning.

'CSI' SNAGS GENE SIMMONS FOR GUEST SPOT
by Philiana Ng

He will appear as himself in a cameo role in the 14th season.

CSI is adding a rocker.

KISS frontman Gene Simmons is heading to CBS' long-running procedural during the 14th season in a cameo, The Hollywood Reporter has learned exclusively.

“We're really excited to have Gene Simmons guest-starring on CSI, playing himself in a rock-and-roll-themed murder mystery," said executive producers Don McGill and Carol Mendelsohn in a joint statement to THR.

Simmons will appear in the 17th episode tentatively scheduled for March 12.

Simmons is repped by CAA. He starred in the A&E reality series Gene Simmons: Family Jewels, and has appeared as himself on Castle and Ugly Betty.

KISS Kids written by Chris Ryall & Tom Waltz
art by Jose Holder

Reviewed by: Conan Tigard

KISS Kids is a wonderful read that I just couldn't put down. I joined the KISS Army way back in the mid-1970's and have been a fan ever since. I never saw them play live, but has always enjoyed listening to their music. In fact, since I have twenty of their album ripped onto my computer, while I read this graphic novel, had their music playing. It really enhanced my reading of this fun-filled book.

The concept of a book for early chapter readers about a hard rock band may seem a little strange to most people, but it really works. The children that read this book don't have to know who the band KISS is to enjoy it, but will certainly know more about them after they finish then when they started. The four main characters are just that, a bunch of cleverly created characters that practically jump off the page. I loved the way that Chris Ryall and Tom Waltz used their creative juices to turn Paul Stanley, Gene Simmons, Ace Frehley, and Peter Criss into smaller versions of their adult selves. Their imagination enabled them to wonder how the band members would have acted as children while already having formed the band KISS and have them already wearing their stage makeup.

The artwork by Jose Holder is what really sold me on this book. It is fantastic! Every page was perfectly imagined and drawn to perfection. I soaked in each page and wondered how it could get any better. Then I would turn the page and discover another wonderfully drawn page. Wow! that is all I can say. Wow!

KISS Co-founders Simmons and Stanley Remember Phantom of the Park director Gordon Hessler

by: Chris Alexander

Legendary genre journeyman director Gordon Hessler (pictured above with Ray Harryhausen) has passed at the age of 83. Hessler, a German born, British-blooded and educated, Hollywood-based filmmaker, is most notable to FANGORIA readers for his interesting post-Roger Corman work for American International Pictures, with the failed new “Poe Cycle” kick-starters THE OBLONG BOX (with Christopher Lee and Vincent Price), MURDERS IN THE RUE MORGUE (with Jason Robards and Herbert Lom) and the Poe flavored Vincent Price classic CRY OF THE BANSHEE, not to mention the utterly mad horror all-star opus SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN starring Price, Lee and Peter Cushing.

Outside of that late 1960s, early 1970s golden period of Gothic horror, Hessler’s most famous contribution to pop culture was his work helming the blazingly awful KISS feature, produced by cartoon kingpins Hanna-Barbera, KISS MEETS THE PHANTOM OF THE PARK. Originally lensed as a TV movie of the week, the bizarre amalgam of live KISS performances, hammy overacting (by both the band and villain Anthony Zerbe) and the unusual Magic Mountain setting was also released in Europe as an extended theatrical feature called ATTACK OF THE PHANTOMS (the version that appears on the KISSOLOGY VOL.2 DVD set). Part pop-art fantasy, part horror movie and part accidental comedy, the film practically defines the term “cult movie” and has an international legion of followers, both KISS fans and non alike.
