Christopher "Critter" Smith keeps battling leukemia that won't go away

By William Croyle

IN THE PHOTO - Critter Smith with a pair of drum sticks used by KISS drummer Eric Singer at a concert Smith attended in Milwaukee. Smith, who has leukemia, attended the concert as a guest of the band and had a backstage pass to meet and be photographed with the band.

Christopher "Critter" Smith and the leukemia that invaded his body two-and-a-half years ago are still battling each other.

Every time it seems the 12-year-old has beaten it, the disease or infections resulting from it recur.

"His spirits are usually up, but I think he's sick of being sick," said his mother, Carol Smith.

The disease is also taking a toll on the family financially.

Critter's story received some national attention last year after he stated in an interview with The Enquirer that he was a big fan of the rock group KISS. Word reached the band, prompting singer Paul Stanley and drummer Eric Singer to call Critter at the hospital and fly him to Milwaukee in June for one of their concerts.

Hi Guys,

My 14-year-old son and I would love to tell you about the bonding of a father and son that took place on 12-13-09 in Pittsburgh. This story actually starts way back in 1975, when I was six. My uncle introduced me to the song "Firehouse" on Alive, and by the time the song ended I was hooked for the rest of my life. You see, my father was a well-respected firefighter and I emulated everything he did... so of course "Firehouse" fit together two things I've come to love!

Fast forward 21 years later. My AWESOME son was born. As soon as I held him, I knew that I wanted him to be a KISS fan too, but I wanted him to come into it on his own with a little bit of pushing him in the right direction.

Well, now the story gets sad. Atom has what's called a congenital heart defect which threatens his life. This July he had to have emergency open heart surgery. The doctor told me that he had a 20% chance to live due to complications during surgery. My world was falling apart!

When they put him in his hospital room, I made it a point to play KISS videos non-stop so he could hear his favorite band! Well, he made a turn-around and woke up 14 days later. I feel that KISS pulled him though! When he first opened his eyes, he said to me, "Dad, will you take me to see KISS?"

Dear KISS,

I had never been to an NCAA game and went to the Gator Bowl for New Years. I just had to go in KISS face in support of my WVU Mountaineers. Several people hugged me and had pics taken with me, even when I went out to eat after the game. It was great fun.

Happy New Year!!!

Your Biggest Fans, USAF, AMMO, Balad, Iraq

Salutes from the AMMO Air Force troops at Spangdahlem Airbase,Germany. You came to visit us in early 2008, then we got to go see you guys in Luxembourg later that night. The most awesome freakin' concert ever. A little later that year, us AMMO troops were tasked to deploy to Balad, Iraq. To boost our morale a little at work, we decided to order face paint and paint our faces in honor of the "Greatest Band in the World."

We had a good time parading around the bomb dump in 130 degree heat and sand storms, showing off our artwork. Hope you enjoy the picture as much as we enjoyed taking it. Thanks again for still kicking ass for us younger generations. I grew up listening to you from my parents and still love to listen to you today. See you at Rock Am Ring later this year!

The "Alive 35 World Tour" is over... Kiss delivered the goods in front of 1.5 million people, between die-hard fans and... young-hard fans! Me and Fabio were lucky (and dynamic) enough to be proudly part of the most fantastic Rock Circus on earth once again, in Europe last year, and most recently in the USA, for 4 Californian awesome shows...

I was such amazed and fascinated seeing so many children in the audience going crazy for our heroes, and most of 'em were perfect Kiss wannabes in full make up and in improvised (with lot of fantasy) mini outfits replicas! Here is the next generation, the next Kiss Army!!! So cute, so rocking! Irresistible... As Mr Stanley spoke before launching The Hymn 'Rock'N'Roll All Nite': "...we were there for your mums and dads, we will be there for you!".

Kiss is magic, Kiss is timeless... I knew it when I was 9 and I've been flashed at first sight by them and their music ("Dynasty" era), and I still feel that strong emotion now that I'm 40 and I rock around with my Kiss female tribute band KISSEXY! Italian but well known internationally, thanks to Kiss that, again, are pure magic... They are a 'Larger Than Life' (as Gene sang back in 1977! ah!) experience: they passed the test of time head high, survived brilliantly all trends and the line up changes.... And I'm always there for them as they are there for me... and all of us... When the lights go down in front of that stage, and the famous (and so true) "You wanted the best, you got the best" announcement starts, well, feels like home!

Latest installment of popular 'Trust Me, I'm a Dr' campaign features the entire KISS lineup

Dr Pepper, the oldest major soft drink in the U.S., is teaming up with legendary rockers KISS as a first-time advertiser during Super Bowl XLIV. The ad will air in the second quarter of the big game and feature Gene Simmons returning as "Dr. Love" in the next evolution of the brand's "Trust Me, I'm a Dr" campaign. Paul Stanley and the entire KISS lineup will join Simmons to describe Dr Pepper Cherry's uniquely smooth taste - achieved with a "kiss" of cherry flavor.

"Being a part of the big game gives us access to nearly 100 million viewers. We're taking this opportunity to reach as many fans as possible to promote our innovative Dr Pepper Cherry flavor and celebrate our 125th Anniversary. This is just the right ad at just the right time," said Tony Jacobs, vice president of marketing for Dr Pepper.
