PARIS REPORT

Off to Paris on the train and it is baking hot - in London and in Paris. Arrive late afternoon and it takes an hour to get to the hotel due to a demonstration - workers marching about more time off. It is John Bionelli's fifty-fourth birthday today. Last year he was here with Aerosmith, now he's in dreary old Boston when he could be eating oysters, quaffing champagne and seeing the Gods Of Thunder! I speak to him - he is so upset he can hardly talk without his voice breaking. I can't decide if he's upset at being so old or missing Kiss - I think missing Kiss...

I get to the Bercy and run straight into Kiss going to a meet and greet, which I shoot a bit of. There is a fan made up like Gene Simmons - except it could be Lars in make up. Paul Stanley, being a kind human being, phones John Bionelli and sings happy birthday down the phone. John at first thought it was a joke with Jim Servis (guitar tec for Tommy Thayer and Joe Perry) putting on Paul's voice. John then calls me back singing the whole of I Was Made For Loving You down the phone.

Good to shoot Kiss indoors. The lights are more dense and rich, I get more of Tommy Thayer and Eric Singer and a couple of 'Great' ones of Paul jumping (I know I overuse the word but it's true). Enjoy the show, Kiss are fun and not many people can match them at what they do, and nothing for me beats a good band with a good light show.

ROCKS ITS WAY BACK TO US
US SHOWS THIS SUMMER

By Kym Kilgore LiveDaily Contributor Photos - Ross Halfin

Following its massive 35th anniversary European tour, KISS will head home for a handful of US performances. The venerable rockers--who previously announced August dates in Sturgis, SD; and Kelseyville, CA--have since tacked on shows in Las Vegas and Stateline, NV. They launched their world tour in March with gigs in Australia and New Zealand, and segued into their first European trek in nearly 10 years. The full Alive/35 Tour schedule is posted at the band's website, with US dates listed below.

The current KISS lineup consists of mainstays Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley, along with guitarist Tommy Thayer and drummer Eric Singer, who replace original members Ace Frehley and Peter Criss, respectively.

In honor of their 35th anniversary, the masked quartet plans to perform the 'KISS Alive' album in its entirety, as well as some rarely played classics, according to a press release.

During its long career, KISS has recorded 36 albums and sold 85 million records worldwide, according to the band's bio.

ROSS HALFIN'S BIO
TOP MUSIC PHOTOGRAPHER

Ross William Halfin is one of the world's top music photographers. Having shot bands such as Led Zeppelin, Rush, The Police, Def Leppard, Iron Maiden, AC/DC, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, Metallica, The Who, Rob Zombie, Pantera, ZZ Top and KISS, Halfin's images are widely published in magazines, newspapers and books.

Halfin began his career as a freelance photographer for Sounds Magazine in the 1970s, where he befriended upcoming Heavy Metal acts like Def Leppard and Iron Maiden, who he would go on to photograph extensively. Halfin continued his career shooting for many years for UK rock magazine Kerrang! and other high-profile UK magazines such as Q, Mojo, Classic Rock and many others around the world. His former assistant on Kerrang!, Scarlet Page, is now one of their top photographers. Scarlet Page's father, Jimmy Page, was frequently photographed by Halfin in the 1970s as a member of Led Zeppelin.

From Ross's site:

The first time I shot them was in Chicago 1979 on the 'Dynasty' tour. I took quite a famous picture of the drum kit high up with Paul Stanley underneath. The tour manager wanted to give us wanker passes for the show which obviously didn't work.

I shot the show from the audience. I shot them again the next year at Stafford Bingley Hall. Kiss' big comeback tour to England. Also in Europe where Iron Maiden supported them...shot them quite a lot after that in the 80s: Texas, on the 'Creatures of the Night' tour with Vinnie Vincent and on probably every tour after that. Paul and Gene are always very nice, apart from Gene's predilection for talking to me in a really bad Dick Van Dyke cockney accent.

ROSS HALFIN'S DIARY CONTINUES
ANOTHER DAY WITH KISS

Paul, Eric and I spend the day at the Imperial War Museum, which I haven't been to in years. See all the tanks, guns, uniforms, and including a Chinese executioners sword (good for chopping off PRs heads), Mein Kampf (Hitler's take on what's wrong with people like me) and a big Holocaust exhibition covering two whole floors. It is sobering. I've been to Auschwitz three times but this is still upsetting. Paul summed it up best, in that you owe it to the people who were there to stay and read and see what happened. People soon forget what the Nazis were about.

Went out to dinner with all of Kiss to Hakkasan (which was my idea). I had forgotten Gene Simmons is a philistine when it comes to food - he wants a hamburger well done - so I got 'What is this, cat's eyes' etc. He wouldn't eat anything. Gene did manage to hold court all night - all about Gene. Eric Singer, who claimed to be a vegetarian, tried ostrich and venison while Gene looked horrified and turned up his nose.

Brian Johnson, singer of ACDC, was there. He came over to the table and told us ACDC had just finished a new record. His accent was so strong I could barely understand him. 'Where's he from, Scotland?' asked Eric. 'Nearly - Newcastle...

'Drove back to the hotel with Paul, Jimmy Page rang me and they had a chat about things guitarists chat about.

Off for a bit more Kiss in Paris next week.
