Here's Tommy Thayer in the latest issue of Westlake Magazine.

As a young KISS fan growing up in Beaverton, Oregon, playing his electric guitar in his bedroom, Tommy Thayer had already learned how to put on Ace Frehley’s make-up, pretending to be a member of the supergroup for Halloween. Of course, Thayer could never imagine that one day he really would be performing in massive arenas beside the real life Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.

Thayer grew up with a great appreciation for music. His mother was a concert violinist and a singer and Thayer’s first instrument was the saxophone. By 13, he says he discovered rock n’ roll, girls and guitars. His mom bought him a Fender Mustang starter electric guitar and his parents let him grow his hair long, he says.

“My mom and dad were cool like that, they got a lot of flak from my aunts and uncles,” he says.

Thayer began with garage bands and founded Black ‘N Blue in 1981, moving from Portland to L.A. “like the Beverly Hillbillies,” he says.

Black ‘N Blue opened for KISS in the mid ‘80s and Simmons had produced a couple of their four albums, so by the time that band had run its course in the early ‘90s, Thayer had a part time job with Stanley and Simmons, working behind the scenes. While many sources say Thayer painted Stanley’s house and cleaned Simmons gutters, he puts that urban legend to rest:

“One time Paul was painting a room in his house and I helped him out and somehow that turned into painting houses. And no, I never cleaned Gene Simmons’ gutters. I did do odd jobs occasionally, to sustain myself and pay my bills at the time.”

BRINGS FOOTBALL TEAM TO LA
By David Greenwald

With Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley among the owners, LA KISS will kick off its first season in March.

Los Angeles will have a football team again this spring -- thanks, in part, to the rock gods of KISS.

According to ESPN, the Arena Football League will bring an expansion team to Anaheim under the ownership of group including KISS' Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley.

The team will be dubbed the LA KISS and use the rock act's logo. They'll join the league with play starting in March.

Season tickets will reportedly come with a free KISS concert.

"As a fast-paced, high-action band, this partnership with the AFL was an obvious fit for us," Simmons told ESPN in a statement. "Attending an LA KISS game in 2014 will be similar to a live KISS show, with thrilling, heart-pounding action."

Stanley also had praise for the AFL's underdog status in a sport dominated by NFL coverage.

"The whole idea of an alternative to what has perhaps become a corporate sport is very intriguing, and resonates with us,” Stanley told USA Today. “We’ve always tried to be a band that relates to everybody, and the AFL is built on that whole premise."

L.A. has seen two previous AFL franchises, though no NFL team has called the city home since the Raiders and Rams both left after the 1994 season.

TRIBUTE ROCKS TEXAS "BACK TO SCHOOL!"
KISSONLINE FAN LETTER
What a Day! On August 19th, San Antonio's very own KISSit pulled off a top secret show at Edgewood ISD Theatre to a crowd of 2,000 people, who prior to the show believed it was just another "Back to School" convocation!

This year's theme "World Class" was just that, and after more than 3 hours of slide shows and guest speakers, the curtain awakened all in attendance. You wanted "World Class" you got "World Class!" Edgewood Theatre erupted and transformed like never before. Cheerleaders in KISS makeup, fans stage diving, fog & lights, 800lbs of confetti & balloons falling from the rafters. A true Rock-n-Roll celebration to ring in another school year.

Edgewood ISD...You Rock! Very special thanks to Mr. Jason Gatell and theatre director Mr. Robert Ramos along with the entire Edgewood staff and HammerHead Productions who coordinated on this "World Class" event.
