The rock god who revolutionized rock music and fashion recently impacted longtime KISS fans including a journalist

By Dita Quinones

Last week, San Diego Kiss fans got to meet rock god Paul Stanley at Warwick's bookstore at a signing session of his new autobiography, Face the Music: A Life Exposed, which is currently No. 2 on the New York Times best-seller list.

Die-hard fans started lining up outside the independent bookstore in La Jolla six hours early.

Kiss' impact in music and fashion is undeniable. Just by looking at the fans waiting in line, it was clear that the band's appeal transcends race, age and gender. Elementary-schoolers came dressed as the Starchild, waiting with their parents. One mother praised Stanley for being a positive role model, while another fan reported attending a whopping 62 Kiss concerts. Despite the long line, one man said he knew Stanley would sign each and every fan's book because "that's just the kind of guy Stanley is."

That statement was proven true that night.

Today, Mike Focareto, CEO of Veteran Tickets Foundation (Vet Tix) announced that the organization has partnered with LA KISS to host an ongoing online auction in support of their deserving veterans.

“Football is one our most sought after tickets, getting the opportunity to partner with newest entry into the Arena Football League is outrageous,” said Focareto. “We know the KISS fans have more than a football team they get rock music, a pyrotechnics show, laser lights, and more. An enormous thanks to Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons for creating this very unique opportunity for our service members and their families.”

Rock 'n' roll legends Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of the band KISS formed L.A. KISS in partnership with media mogul Doc McGee and AFL Veteran Brett Bouchy after they saw a need to fuse sports and entertainment in an environment that was enjoyable for all the family.

LA KISS Co-owner Breyt Bouchy stated, “Being a community advocate has always been a trademark of KISS, it just transcends into our new football team’s fans and what we stand for. We feel proud to be supporting Vet Tix, this partnership gives LA KISS the opportunity to provide our military and their families with edge-of-your-seat entertainment.”

The auction ends on Friday, April 25th; bidders can expect to see a signed football by the entire KISS band, two signature KISS Jerseys, and a KISS Helmet signed and designed by Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley. Proceeds from the winning bids will be donated to Veteran Tickets Foundation. All winners will be provided a tax deductible receipt from VetTix.

Since 2008 Vet Tix has grown tremendously, donating more than 800,000 tickets to veterans and their families.

Gene Simmons and Paul Stanley of KISS plan to open their new Overland Park Rock & Brews on April 29. They also are planning an area fundraiser on May 29.

The Rock & Brews restaurants offer craft beers, premium wines and a full bar. The menu includes “opening acts” like chipotle chili cheese fries, Mexican street corn and Bavarian pretzels; “VIP” salads including Tuscan Kale and Tequila Sunrise steak; hand-crafted burgers and “Headliner” sandwiches like pulled pork or sesame-seed crusted seared Ahi; “frontrow” specialty pizzas; and other items like fish and chips, Memphis-style baby back ribs, chocolate-filled French doughnuts with raspberry sauce, and “real” beer floats.

On May 29, Simmons and Stanley also will host a private luncheon for more than 100 “wounded warriors, veterans and active military,” as well as an evening gala that will benefit the Kansas City VA Hospital and will be open to the public.

The gala will feature a live performance by the Kansas City-based tribute band Almost Kiss, along with a “few surprises.”

Tickets for the gala are $100 per person and include a red-carpet arrival, two adult beverages per person or soft drinks, a sampling of Rock & Brews cuisine, a chance to mingle with Simmons and Stanley, and a “rockin’ good time.”

KISS lead singer opens up about connection to 'Phantom of the Opera'

From Associated Press

Kiss frontman Paul Stanley feels a strong connection to the title character of "The Phantom of the Opera," and not just because he's spent nearly 40 years onstage with his face covered in paint.

"Here's somebody who has a disfigurement that they're covering and they're trying to reach out to a woman and, as much as they want to do it, they don't know how. Well, that pretty much summed up my life, you know. Only I wasn't living in a dungeon under an opera house," Stanley said.

That's because the 62-year old musician was born with a congenital deformity that left him deaf in one ear, making it hard for him to communicate or do well in school.

The recently inducted Rock and Roll Hall of Famer describes his long, and sometime painful, journey from his "less than optimal childhood" in New York City to the mega-success of rocking all night and partying every day with Kiss in his autobiography, "Face the Music: A Life Exposed" (Harper One).

"This isn't a Kiss book. This is really a book about my life. I was steadfastly against the idea of doing it for decades, because the great George Orwell once said that the autobiography is the most outrageous form of fiction," Stanley said. "But I realized it could be inspiring to people."

Stoy by Pat Sherman / La Jolla Light

More than 600 fans of Kiss vocalist and guitarist Paul Stanley descended on La Jolla April 17 for a chance to have the 2014 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee sign copies of his new memoir, “Face the Music: A Life Exposed” at Warwick’s Bookstore.

Though people of all ages traveled from as far away as Los Angeles, Phoenix, Las Vegas and Germany for a chance to meet the Kiss star, Anne Marie Flores merely had to walk over from her job at Best Western Inn by the Sea on Fay Avenue.

Born Stanley Bert Eisen, the 62-year-old rocker was about an hour late, giving Flores a chance to dive into the book’s prologue while waiting in line.

“I wish he’d go back on stage,” Flores said, noting Stanley’s 1999 lead in a Canadian production of ‘The Phantom of the Opera.” “I don’t care what it would cost — I’d pay.”

Warwick’s employee and Kiss fan Emily Vermillion of La Jolla said she was excited to learn Stanley was coming to place where she works.

“I was teaching art in Iowa City, Iowa (in the late ’70s) and all of my fifth and sixth graders showed up for Halloween in Kiss costumes,” she recalled. “I said, ‘I’ve got to find out about these guys,’ and I did — and I’ve loved them ever since.”
