Review: KISS gives AFTER SHOCKS fans their money’s worth — and a whole lot more!

Day 2 of the four-day Aftershock festival at Discovery Park in Sacramento on Friday was dominated by heavy metal head banging, musical fireworks, gory onstage antics and 90-plus-degree heat.

Danzig, Lamb of God, Gwar and Clutch were out in force with powerful performances, but the true heroes of the day were the legendary rockers of KISS who pulled out all the stops and let loose a dazzling stadium-sized show for legions of KISS Army fans.

The “Gods of Thunder” proved once again that today’s rock theatrics, pyrotechnics, and elevated platforms started with them taking it to a new level decades ago.

Fans were treated to everything they would expect from a KISS show — Gene Simmons blowing fire, spitting up blood, and rising up to literally the rafters of the stage lighting above; Paul Stanley still nailing those soaring vocals and energizing the crowd; Spaceman Tommy Thayer going off with a smoking lead guitar that shot out sparks across the stage; and Catman Eric Singer on drums adding maybe the best vocals of the night during “Black Diamond” and of course a dramatic drum solo lifted him skyward.

They also got to see Stanley fly across the crowd as he gripped a cable, four massive statues representing each band member towering above the stage, streamers in the air, giant inflatable KISS balls sent into the crowd and nonstop explosions of flames and fireworks.

The 2-hour set — which lasted longer than other headliners so far and by far — included all big hits, such as Shout It Out Loud, Detroit Rock City, Calling Dr. Love, Cold Gin, Lick It Up, and they even unashamedly brought out the disco ball theme for I Was Made For Lovin’ You.

They sent the crowd into the night with Do You Love Me? and Rock and Roll All Nite

It was truly an unbelievable and unforgettable show for all, and many in the all-ages crowd seeing the band for the first  time.
