Kyle Jones was pleased his missing wallet was found. He just didn�t expect it would turn up 25 years later.
In 1986, Jones was a high school junior at Salina South High School and played offensive and defensive tackle on the football team.
One day, while walking out of the school gym, the 16-year-old accidentally dropped his wallet through an air- conditioning vent.Hi KISS & the KISS Army!

Kyle Jones was pleased his missing wallet was found. He just didn�t expect it would turn up 25 years later.
In 1986, Jones was a high school junior at Salina South High School and played offensive and defensive tackle on the football team.
One day, while walking out of the school gym, the 16-year-old accidentally dropped his wallet through an air conditioning vent.
�I tried to reach it, but I wasn�t having any luck and knocked it further down the grate,� said Jones, now 42 and a systems operations engineer for the U.S. Post Office in San Mateo, Calif.
Losing his wallet didn�t seem like a big deal to Jones at the time.
�There wasn�t any money or anything else important in it, so I wasn�t concerned,� he said.
Fast forward 25 years. While looking for a lost item in the boys� locker room Thursday night, swim coach Keith Smith made an unusual discovery.
�I was using a lifesaving hook pole to reach on top of an air conditioning duct,� he said. �Found a wallet instead. (It was) pure chance.�
The brown nylon wallet that fell to the floor of the locker room, which sits beneath the gym, was stiff, marked up and frayed in places but otherwise in remarkably good condition.
A 1980s time capsule
Inside the wallet was a time capsule of a 1980s high school junior�s life and times: a Salina South photo ID of one Kyle Jones, grinning into the camera; several pay stubs from a part-time job at Big Cheese Pizza; a 1986 Salina YMCA membership card; a pass to basketball games at Kansas Wesleyan University; a Marine recruitment card; a State Farm insurance card; a Dickinson Theatre movie student discount card (all movies just 50 cents!); a school cafeteria meal ticket (with several unpunched meals); and a ticket stub for a concert by the legendary rock band KISS, which took place March 9, 1986, at the Bicentennial Center.
The KISS ticket price? Just $14.
The wallet also contained a faded hall pass signed by assistant principal George Troutfetter. Still assistant principal 25 years later, Trout-
fetter strained to remember Jones.
�I�ve signed millions of hall passes during the years,� he said.
Area was remodeled
Troutfetter said it was unusual to find an old wallet in the boys� locker room, especially since the locker room was remodeled several years ago.
�That must have been the one area they didn�t touch,� he said.
Smith turned in the generation-old wallet to South High athletic director Ken Stonebraker, who discovered the names of Jones� parents, Donley and Janet, on Kyle Jones� State Farm insurance card.
The Joneses, who still live in Salina, were given the wallet and immediately called their son to tell him the news.
�I was shocked that a wallet from 25 years ago was found,� Donley Jones said. �I don�t remember him even losing it.�
Moved to Salina in 1984
The Jones family first moved to Salina in 1984, and Kyle Jones attended Salina South during his sophomore and junior years, from 1984 to 1986. While a student at South, Kyle said, he loved playing football and eagerly looked forward to South-Central rivalry games.
�I also liked to skateboard with a couple of other fellows,� he said.
The Joneses moved to New- ton after Kyle�s junior year, and he graduated from New- ton High School in 1987. Kyle�s football prowess won him a scholarship at Garden City Community College, where he played offensive guard for two years.
After college, Kyle joined the Marine Corps Reserve, where he received electronics training.
This led to electronics jobs at Philips Lighting and Great Plains Manufacturing in Salina, and then to an electronics maintenance position with the Salina Post Office.
Two years ago, after Kyle had earned a degree in engineering physics from Kansas Wesleyan University, he was offered a job in San Mateo.
Hate to see my ID picture
After 25 years, Kyle is certain that when he looks through his old wallet again, he�ll feel nostalgic � up to a point.
�I think I�ll really hate to see my ID picture from back then,� he said.
Kyle knows a few particular items will spark vivid memories, like the 1986 KISS ticket stub.
�We camped for three days to get front row seats at the concert,� he recalled. �There was no bigger deal than seeing KISS in concert.�
So wasn�t he upset to lose his KISS ticket stub after his wallet fell into the vent for what seemed like forever?
�I got a guitar pick and drumsticks, so the ticket stub wasn�t that important,� he said.
